The EU Digital Product Passport Registry Is Now Live. What Does This Mean for Manufacturers?
The European Commission has taken another significant step towards the digitalisation of products and the circular economy by officially launching the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) Registry, together with a testing (sandbox) environment and the new official DPP platform.
This marks an important milestone: the Digital Product Passport is no longer just a regulatory concept—it is becoming a real European infrastructure that manufacturers will gradually use when placing products on the EU market.
So, what does this actually mean for manufacturers, and should businesses already be taking action?
What is the EU DPP Registry?
One of the most common misconceptions is that the DPP Registry is a database containing all product information. It is not.
The EU DPP Registry does not store detailed product data. Instead, it acts as a central European register that records the existence of a Digital Product Passport and links a unique identifier to that passport.
In other words, detailed product information continues to be managed by the manufacturer or the Digital Product Passport solution provider, while the Registry serves as trusted infrastructure that enables Digital Product Passports to be located and verified across the European Union.
What Has Changed?
With the launch of the Registry, the European Commission has established one of the key building blocks required for implementing the Digital Product Passport ecosystem.
Businesses now have access to:
• the official DPP Registry
• a testing (sandbox) environment
• technical documentation
• user guidance
• the official Digital Product Passport platform.
It is important to understand that the launch of the Registry does not mean that every product must immediately have a Digital Product Passport.
These obligations will be introduced gradually, depending on individual product categories and the relevant European legislation. The first mandatory implementation applies to certain categories of batteries from February 2027, with additional industries following through sector-specific delegated acts.
What Does This Mean for Manufacturers?
For manufacturers, this announcement sends a clear message: now is the time to prepare.
The Digital Product Passport is no longer a future initiative. The European infrastructure is now in place, and regulatory requirements will gradually expand across multiple industries.
Businesses that prepare their product data, internal processes and digital systems early will be better positioned to comply with future legislation, demonstrate regulatory compliance and manage product information throughout the entire product lifecycle.
Where Does NOS Fit In?
At NOS, we already develop and implement Digital Product Passport solutions that enable businesses to manage product data, integrate with ERP and PIM systems, generate QR codes and align business processes with upcoming regulatory requirements.
The launch of the EU DPP Registry represents the next stage of this journey—connecting existing DPP solutions with the official European infrastructure where required for specific product categories.
Our goal is not simply to deliver software. We help manufacturers understand regulatory requirements, prepare their product data and successfully implement Digital Product Passport solutions within their organisations.
